SAILS (Support and Independent Living Service) is a suite of commissioned supported housing provision for Young People aged 16 to 25 years who are homeless or threatened with homelessness, have a Gateshead local connection and require support to live independently.

The service is needs-led and provision is allocated to Young People by a Multi-Disciplinary Panel on the basis of a comprehensive needs assessment, completed in partnership with the Young Person. A Strengths/Risk Based Approach is also a key element of the Needs Assessments, which can be completed in the accommodation or through outreach.

There are 6 specific services: Needs Assessment Service (20 bed Unit) - provided by Changing Lives; Shared Living Service (12 bed Unit) - provided by Home Group; Semi-Independent Supported Living Service (4 bed Unit) - provided by Home Group; Dispersed Housing with Floating Support (4 Units of accommodation) - provided by Home Group; Supported Lodgings (8 to 12 Placements with Host Families) - provided by Barnardo's Taster Flats with Floating Support (30 Units of accommodation) - provided by The Gateshead Housing Company.

All services are Psychologically Informed and the Shared Living Service includes on-site clinical interventions provided by a Psychologist and Occupational Therapist. Young People are encouraged to get involved in the functionality of the model and peer mentoring is a key part of provision.

Some quotes from Young People who have accessed the services include: "The Staff are very helpful and supportive, if I wasn't here I would be lost." "I finally feel like I am home." "I feel comfortable in my own skin, and never get judged."
