Aged 17 years or over.

Research has shown that volunteers make a huge difference in preventing malnutrition, trips, falls and loneliness.  They also greatly reduce patients’ anxiety levels and speed up the time it takes before they go home.

You will be part of our new Response Volunteer Team who are available to support all of our staff across the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site making a direct, positive impact to patients and their families.

There are a variety of tasks to help with:

  1. Collect supplies from pharmacy
  2. Retrieve notes from other departments and deliver to clinic
  3. Taking a patient to the shop or outside for some fresh air
  4. Assist with the replenishing of stock
  5. Support a patient on the ward who is prone to falls or maybe has no visitors
  6. Collect items from the sewing room
  7. Collect ad-hoc meals from the catering department as and when required
  8. Meeting patients at main entrance who require support getting to appointments or who are lost
  9. Admin tasks such as delivering urgent post to the mail room, distribution of leaflets/posters
  10. Support patients at mealtimes.

Volunteers are complimentary to paid staff and will not be used to replace roles that are usually undertaken by hospital employees.

Skills needed

A commitment to improve the patient’s experience of their time in hospital.
Fit and active as the job entails periods of sitting, standing and walking.
Well presented, with a friendly and approachable manner and good verbal communication skills.
An ability to relate well to people on a one to one basis and be sympathetic to others’ situations.
An ability to learn the lay out of the hospital well.
An ability to act on own initiative within the role of the bleep volunteer.
A willingness to be flexible and to follow guidance from the Patient Experience and Volunteer Manager.
A commitment to the Trusts equal opportunities and diversity polices.
A willingness to abide by the Trust volunteer guidelines, including rules of confidentiality, health and safety and manual handling
To be willing to receive training as appropriate to this role.
A volunteer can offer emotional support and empathy but must under no circumstances offer advice or a medical opinion on a patient’s treatment or assist with anything of a clinical nature.
