Your Voice Counts
About us:

Your Voice Counts is a registered charity that supports people with learning disabilities to live the lives they want to live.

We can help people in lots of ways. Here are some of the different services we provide:

Help First drop in

We run a drop in at our offices on Swinburne Street every Friday from 12 - 3pm

Help First drop in sessions are a great, safe, friendly place for people with learning disabilities and their families to get help with things like:

  • Help with reading and understanding letters
  • Applying for benefits
  • Help to make friends
  • Making or going to appointments
  • Paying bills
  • Planning important things
  • Learn to travel independently
  • Getting involved in what's going on where you live
  • Much, much more!

For more information please contact Alex or Irene on 0191 478 64 72

Sometimes you need help to sort a big problem in your life or you might have to make a big decision. Often there are a lot of different people telling you what they think would be best for you.

An advocate might be able to help.

They will listen to you and find out what YOU want. They will help you to understand what is happening and they will support you to speak up for what you want.

If you need them to, they can speak for you at meetings.

They are INDEPENDENT and don't work for the council, health service or care providers.

Their job is to speak up for YOU.

If you think an advocate might be able to help you ring 0191 4786472 or come down to our drop in.

Self Advocacy

We support a group called Gateshead People. This group is made up of people with learning disabilities who support each other to speak up about the things that are important to them and help each other to do the things they want to do. Gateshead People also run a men's group and a women's group once a month. You can find out more about them and what they do here: http://www.gatesheadpeople.btck.co.uk/

There are lots of different ways you can support Your Voice Counts to help people:

  • You can help out at our drop ins or with one of the groups we support.
  • You can become a Travel Buddy and teach people to learn to travel independently.
  • You can support a person with a learning disability get out and about to access the community.
  • You can help us in the office with things like admin and keeping our website and social media pages up to date.
  • And lots more!

We train all our volunteers and make sure they have all the support they need to help people no matter what role they take on. If you would like to find out more please contact Irene Storey on 0191 4786472 or email her on irene.storey@yvc.org.uk
