At QE Gateshead we recognise and value the contribution that hospital volunteers make to our services.

Volunteers play an important role in complementing and enhancing the work of our staff.  We appreciate the immense value these volunteers bring and the many ways in which they benefit our patients. We have more than 140 volunteers working across our hospital in a variety of roles but we're always on the lookout for more enthusiastic and dedicated people to join our team.

We are urgently seeking support from volunteers and currently have a number of volunteering opportunities available and we would like your support with:

  • Response Volunteers Programme - run errands for various wards and departments such as taking patient notes to wards and supporting staff wellbeing by making them a cup of tea.
  • Patient Experience volunteers - support on wards, sit with patients, play games, help with surveys, helping front of house in the emergency department, help restocking clinical products (eg. making sure trolleys have plenty gloves, aprons, specimen bottles)
  • Dining Companion
  • PALS Volunteer
  • Emergency Care Centre Volunteer
  • Meet and Greet Volunteer
  • Maternity Volunteer
  • Patient Experience Volunteer
  • Jubilee Day Unit Support Volunteer
  • Head-Dress Service Volunteer
  • Chemotherapy Day Unit Volunteer

"I want to be a nurse. I’m doing my GCSEs at college and I hope to do an Access to Healthcare course next year. I like helping out as a dining companion." Chloe

"I really enjoy it and I feel like I’m giving something back to my community. I work with a great team and I get to meet so many nice people who appreciate my help." Sandra

"I decided I wanted to give something back to the NHS. I love the banter and seeing lots of different people. It’s great feeling useful when people are lost and need your help.  The volunteer team is smashing." Pam

It is a requirement of the NHS that you complete an application form in order for us to obtain your details and also to ensure that we match you with an appropriate volunteering role.

A health check is also important for us to establish you are fit to undertake the role you are volunteering for and to identify if any modifications are required to assist you to undertake the role.
