This volunteer role involves assisting in the successful delivery of our Day Opportunity Service at St Mary’s Church Hall, Shields Road, Heworth, Gateshead, NE10 0UY.
Objectives:
To help older people maintain their dignity and independence by assisting in a community based social setting. We aim to provide an enjoyable social out-of-house experience for our clients in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. This particular role is responsible for preparing and cooking an appetising, tasty and nutritious 2 course lunch with refreshments for our clients.
The role involves:
- Preparing and cooking lunch for up to three days a week i.e. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for up to 15 clients.
- Assisting with menu planning, purchasing food and general supplies with budget provision.
- Keeping the kitchen area clean within health and safety accordance; helping to serve meals and washing up.
- Being a reliable team member.
- Attending training as required (such as Food Hygiene, Health and Safety training. Manual handling)
- Having an awareness of fire safety
- Being responsible to the Day Opportunities Supervisor.
- Good personal hygiene that is essential at all times.

Skills needed
Cooking experience is essential. Additional qualifications would be desirable.
Experience of planning menus & assisting with food preparation.
An awareness of Health and Safety and food hygiene issues.
Ability to work quickly but safely under pressure.
Reliable, patient and caring with a friendly personality and good communication skills.
Have a flexible attitude to work.

Expenses: Age UK Gateshead will pay any agreed travel expenses (bus fare, etc.) on production of receipts paid out in the course of journeys. Use of your car will be paid on a mileage basis for all authorised journeys undertaken.
