Tyne Theatre & Opera House is a beautiful Grade 1 listed building in the heart of Newcastle. Over the past 12 months we have been developing a performance calendar to hold details of all performances from the theatre’s opening in 1867 until 1919. Thanks to a fantastic team of volunteers who have researched over 23,000 newspaper adverts, programmes and daybills, we now have a searchable online database of over 3,500 events, which is held on our theatre website.

We now want to take our research further. In 1919 the theatre was converted into a cinema called the ‘Stoll Picture Theatre’. We want to add to our database by researching and collating information on all the films (from silent through to ‘talkies’) that were shown at our venue.

Volunteers will need to access online information from newspapers via the British Newspaper Archive and transfer it to an Excel spreadsheet.

Skills needed

Volunteers will need a keen eye for detail and basic computer literacy skills as the role will include online research. A knowledge of Excel would be useful.
