Congratulations, having come this far, you will probably have decided that volunteering is something you’d like to do. That’s a fantastic decision!
There are numerous volunteer opportunities to choose from but the key is to find a position that you would enjoy, and where your commitment matches the organisation’s needs. Ask yourself the following:
- What are your areas of interest - adults, children, animals, the environment?
- What causes are important to you and what are you passionate about?
- What skills can you bring to a volunteer role? Do you want to use them or would you rather learn something completely different?
- Do you prefer to as part of a team or help remotely from home?
- Are you better behind the scenes or do you prefer to take a more visible, people-centred role?
- How much time are you willing to commit? Is this a one-off or a more regular offer of help?
Take some time to think about why you want to volunteer and what you would you enjoy doing that matches your personality, skills and interests. Is there something specific you want to do or achieve as a volunteer? For example, you might want to:
- Improve your neighbourhood and community.
- Meet new people with different outlooks or experiences.
- Try something outside your normal comfort zone, to develop your confidence.
- Do something with your spare time that makes an immediate impact.
- See new places or experience a different way of living.
- Try a new type of work that you might want to pursue as a full-time job.
- Expand on your interests and hobbies.
