Our May and June exhibition at the Heritage Centre’s ‘Inside Out Gallery’ is with local printmaker Kate Miller.

Kate is a linocut printmaker, who is inspired by being outside in the fresh air in the northeast of England.  Although based in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, she also loves to explore the beautiful countryside, long sandy beaches, rolling hills and historic castles in the wider region, so there is no end of inspiration to hand.

Other work may concentrate on smaller details such as seed heads, pebbles, hedgerows or rock pools, but always, there’ll be a nod to nature and its beauty and intricacy.

Recently, Kate has begun an ongoing series of mini prints entitled Nature’s Cycle, celebrating the beauty and regenerative power of nature, through small found natural forms from the northeast, including flowers, cones, shells, buds and leaves.  She is also beginning to explore wildlife themes in her work, including the Red Kite print celebrating the Derwent Valley where the Heritage Centre is situated.

“John Muir once said that we should all keep close to Nature’s heart. I think he meant that it’s important once in a while to step outside of our day to day lives and just let ourselves experience Nature. Whether it’s a dip in the sea, climbing a mountain or listening to birdsong, a reminder of Nature’s beauty and power can be restorative in every sense”.

All Kate’s exhibition work, along with unframed prints and cards are available to purchase from the Heritage Centre, please speak to a member of our team if you’re interested.
