Birth of the Borough

Saltwell  and 1 more

A new book launching in December tells the story of how the Gateshead Borough was formed in 1974.

Fifty years ago the first proposals were put forward to create the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead. In 1974 the Borough was born with the merging of the old Gateshead County Borough, the Urban District Councils of Blaydon, Felling, Ryton and Whickham; and Birtley and Lamesley from Chester-le-Street Rural District Council. Join author Andrew Clark for a talk about his new book which tells the story of Gateshead over the past 50 years. The book will be available to loan from Gateshead Council Libraries and to buy from the Central Library Shop.
