Care or Retail work experience

Thinking of getting a job in care or retail? We offer experience of working in these areas, where you can develop the skills you’ll need to get a job.

Age UK Gateshead is able to offer through the Future You project work experience opportunities for any resident of Gateshead who is economically inactive or unemployed.  

For people who are thinking about whether the care or retail sectors could provide them the opportunity for employment, this work experience will give them the answer. The care and retail sectors are currently understaffed, so the experience gained will be invaluable in enabling them to apply for current vacancies if they choose to do so after the placement.  

Placements will also enable participants to develop new job and life skills irrespective of whether they choose to work in these sectors ultimately, as well as helping them to build confidence, experience and new networks, all of which are invaluable to anyone looking for employment.  


A work experience placement for 21 hours+ in a care or retail setting, allowing the participant to gain real life work experience and skills in the chosen setting. Participants can commit to both work experience opportunities if they wish to explore each.  

  • Retail Work Experience Placements will be in an Age UK Gateshead shops Low Fell, Gateshead, Blaydon, Furniture Warehouse 

  • Care Work Experience Placements will take place in the community/House on the Hill, St Marys, Disability North or QE Gateshead. 

At the end of the work experience placement in care, participants will have the opportunity to progress into a qualification in Health and Social Care.  

Time commitment and format 

21 hours of work experience. Modest travel expenses will be paid to support with access to work experience placements
