Ben Nevis Charity Walk

Summit of Ben Nevis

Study Centre staff and students have scaled new heights with a charity challenge on Britain's highest peak.

A dozen volunteers from the Evermor Community Group completed a 4,400ft climb of Ben Nevis in Scotland, raising £1,761.72 in sponsorship for good causes along the way.

The group was set up by students at Evermor Solutions, which helps people who have suffered a life-changing injury or a long-term physical or mental disability and want to study at Higher Education level.

The organisation, which has study centres at Consett & Birtley, runs distance-learning courses, which can be studied part-time to suit individual circumstances.

The Evermor Community Group was set up by students who use the study centres with the aim of helping the wider community through fundraising and events.

On September 4, members presented £880.86 each to Villa Real School in Consett, and the Birtley based North Regional Association for Sensory Support.

Jackie Wanless, service manger at NRASS, said: ''This Money is a massive boost to NRASS who aim to eliminate discrimination and prejudice by providing an accessible free Advocacy and Welfare Rights service to people with a sensory impairment.''

Sharon Common, head teacher of Villa Real School, said the money would help provide new bays which help develop pupils ability to work independently.
