GVIF - Gateshead Visually Impaired Forum

A group helping visually impaired people in Gateshead borough Gateshead Visually Impaired Forum is a user led group (registered as a charity 1130029 in 2009) set up to provide help and support for visually impaired people in the Gateshead area, aiming to promote their personal and social welfare and their independence. We also promote education with respect to visually impaired people within society.  There are lots of problems associated with sight loss and all of our users have experienced them at some point, its good to talk with others who have similar issues and feel that you are not alone. Why not join our user group and help us make changes to everyday facilities, which for the visually impaired are now a problem. For instance, simple changes to signs, display boards, timetables etc. can make all the difference to the visually impaired, and our group are focused on these issues, and we approach the authorities as a group and this does make a difference. The local authorities now use our group as a sounding board for issues relating to sight loss.   Our group has received funding which has enabled us to buy computers and CCTV’s (large video magnifiers that help with reading), this equipment is for the forum members and is free to use – we also provide training geared to your ability and visual impairment. Perhaps you want to refresh your computer skills or even get to grips with Internet or email or just write a letter. We use screen magnification software with speech output and there is always someone who can help. Do you need help with setting up or fixing your computer, we have volunteers who can help. Do you want to buy a computer, but are confused by all the jargon, we can help you choose and can set up the equipment for you and also install software and internet connection.             Would you like to have a day out with our group, we all know the problems with sight loss and how hard it is to get around, our group have a day trip each month, bring a friend, partner or a family member. Trips in 2009 included Whitby, York, Seahouses, The Lake District, Rothbury, Belsay Hall. We also arrange short holiday breaks – last year we went to the Cotswolds – including Stratford upon Avon
