Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place on 27th January each year, and is the day for everyone to remember the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution, and in the subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

On HMD we honour the survivors of these regimes and challenge ourselves to work to end discrimination and  prejudice; and pledge to help create a safer, better future.

The annual theme for HMD 2018 is 'The Power of Words'. It asks audiences to think about how language can be a potent source for both good and bad, as well as the effects of propaganda. This year's theme focuses on three main life stories: Anne Frank, Dr Alfred Weiner and Sophari Ashley. On top of this is a call to action: to use our voices to promote a safer, better future. Marking HMD is an opportunity for people of different backgrounds to come together to celebrate the diversity of their neighbourhoods. Would you like to hold an event or activity on or around 27 January 2017 to mark HMD? This could be as simple as putting up some of our genocide awareness posters in your local community centres or public spaces, or as complex as organising a community event. It could even be hosting a dinner for some of your friends using our recipe cards. We are running two free workshops for activity organisers to attend to explore the theme and network. These will be in Darlington on Tuesday 17th October and Newcastle on Thursday 26th October. You can book here if you'd like to attend: http://www.hmd.org.uk/page/workshops. Our website, hmd.org.uk, has lots of information about HMD and you can access free resources that we produce to help people commemorate it, including our ‘Get Involved' guides which can be accessed here: http://hmd.org.uk/page/your-audience.   We also produce a free activity pack, which includes a series of posters and a copy of our ‘About HMD’ booklet. You can request a copy of this on the website, however, they will not be available until September 13th.   If you already have plans to mark HMD then I would love to hear about them. Alternatively, if you would like to discuss this further, or if there is any support I can offer, please do not hesitate to contact me, and I will be delighted to help.
