SLARA is a Residents Association based in Birtley, a mile south of the "Angel of the North". The Association represents about 280 households in 11 streets in central / west Birtley.  Our aims include working to improve our environment, encouraging social inclusion and supporting local projects and initiatives.

George Street Pocket Park was created by this Association for use by the whole community. We regularly have 'Clean Up Sessions' at the park and provide bins, bags, gloves and litter-pickers. We also arrange day trips for local residents and their friends; and hold coffee mornings and social events. Members receive periodic news sheets advising of what the committee is involved with and planned events.

Annual membership is just £2 per household. Although most of our meetings are held at Birtley's Methodist Church Hall this Association is independent of all religious, ethnic, social and political groups. Anyone may attend our meetings which are held at approximately 2-monthly intervals. The Annual General Meeting takes place in October or November. See the Church's notice board for details of meetings and forthcoming events.

SLARA is a founder member of the Birtley Community Partnership and has been in existence since 1999.
